This is my take on it

Groups

My most recent reading in my Public Relations Campaigns class was concerning group dynamics.  It discussed the importance of groups, explained how groups are more effective than working alone and how to make those groups better.

I was surprised to learn that group work was actually considered an evolutionary advantage that allowed our ancestors, Cro-Magnons, to survive and out compete Neanderthals. Skills like hunting, gathering and building were all performed by  groups of Cro-Magnons to provide more successful outcomes.  Neanderthals went it alone.

Sometimes I feel like a Neanderthal. Going it alone and being responsible for my own work seems like a better idea at times.  However, when one seizes the full potential of a group, there are many more advantages.

My reading went on to point out that groups are making better businesses and education systems.  Being able to work in a group has also been shown to improve productivity and social skills.

It is becoming more common that companies want to hire employees that can work with a team to accomplish company goals.  Indeed, in most companies workers rely on each other to perform their jobs.  Teams have become increasingly necessary to create healthier and more productive companies.

Looking at my future, I consider the need to learn better group work skills.

Soon I will be utilizing my skills with a group to design a public relations campaign for my class.  No matter where I end up professionally, I believe that learning to work well with others will be key part of making it there.
