Climatologists losing a PR war?

without comments

Are climatologists really losing a PR war, or are they losing a truth war? I recently read an article posted on the BBC Web site about climate change. In the article, it said that the number of British people who are becoming more skeptical about climate change is rising.  It also appears the same for citizens of the United States.

Why are people becoming so skeptical? I have studied some of the reports on Global Warming, and I have drawn this conclusion.  Climate change is real. It is also not completely confirmed that we are the main cause. I recently read in the book SuperFreakonomics that the correlation between carbon emissions and global warming patterns is wrong.  It is not a rise in CO2 that leads to a rise in global warming, but the opposite.

According to the book, data collected from researchers shows that the earth has always been on “ups and downs” when it comes to climate.

Did you know that we were concerned about “global cooling” in the early 90s?

Yes. An eruption from a volcano sent sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. The earth actually cooled. Scientists were panicking. Researchers now are actively developing ways to simulate an eruption that would in turn cool the earth. Also, when life on earth was first formed, the carbon ratio in our atmosphere was much higher than it is currently.

Why is this information important? Because anyone with common sense can figure out that the earth has heated and cooled for thousands of years! That is why that boring History class is so important.

So, if climatologist consider themselves in a PR war, then they are losing. They are losing to the public because the public is not ignorant.

I chuckled as I watched the news the other day, and I heard that climatologist are now blaming the colder winters and increased snowfall to global warming. Really?

Climatologist need to be honest if they want to win this PR war.  You can’t win it if the public does not believe you. They need to be winning the war by providing truth.

Do we need to be more sustainable? Yes. Why? Because it is smart. Not because of some misguided notion that we are in immediate peril. We need to be good stewards of the earth.

In PR, the truth is hardly ever a bad thing, even when you are wrong.  This is something that climatologist and climate change proponents should consider as they go forward.
